Why GOTS & IVN BEST Matter — And Why We Choose Them for Our Children

Journal — Organic Certifications Explained
Parenthood changes the way you look at almost everything.
You begin reading labels differently.
You think about what touches your baby’s skin.
You begin questioning what things are truly made from — and how they arrived in your child’s wardrobe in the first place.
In a world where children’s clothing is increasingly fast, synthetic, and trend-driven, certifications offer something rare: clarity. Two of the most trusted textile certifications in Europe are the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and IVN BEST.
At Pippa & Pluk, these standards quietly shape almost every brand we bring into our collection — not because they are trendy buzzwords, but because they represent a deeper commitment to quality, transparency, and our children’s wellbeing.

What is GOTS?
The Global Organic Textile Standard — better known as GOTS — is one of the world’s leading certifications for organic textiles.
A GOTS-certified garment must meet strict environmental and social criteria throughout the entire production process, from the harvesting of fibres to the final product.
This means:
Organic farming without harmful pesticides
Strict limits on chemicals and dyes
Safer working conditions and fair labour standards
Full traceability throughout production
High standards for wastewater treatment and environmental impact
For parents, this matters because children’s skin is incredibly sensitive — especially babies.
Their skin is thinner, more absorbent, and more vulnerable to irritation from harsh chemicals often found in conventional clothing production.
Choosing certified natural fibres means choosing materials designed to feel softer, cleaner, and calmer against sensitive skin.

What is IVN-Best?
IVN BEST is considered one of the strictest textile certifications in the world.
Created by the International Association of the Natural Textile Industry in Germany, IVN BEST goes even further than many organic standards.
To receive IVN BEST certification, garments must meet exceptionally high requirements around:
Natural fibres
Environmental impact
Ethical production
Animal welfare
Chemical restrictions
Many wool products carrying the IVN BEST label are made from organic merino wool sourced from farms with high animal welfare standards, including strict rules around mulesing.
Within the European natural textile industry, IVN BEST is often considered the gold standard for integrity and purity.
